The U 89 is a universally applicable studio microphone. It contains a double membrane capsule in its wire mesh basket. With five different directional characteristics, the microphone can be easily adapted to large or wide sound bodies and can also be used for recordings at a greater distance from the sound source.
The maximum sound pressure level of 134 dB can be increased to 140 dB with a rotary switch. Another rotary switch is provided for lowering the transmission level below the selectable frequencies 80 Hz or 160 Hz.
With a rotary switch below the capsule basket, in addition to the three common directional characteristics omni, cardioid and figure eight, the hypercardioid and wide cardioid settings can also be selected. The hypercardioid allows sound sources positioned to the right and left of the object to be recorded to be blocked out better than the cardioid, while the wide cardioid is advantageously used for the transmission of extended sound sources.
